Lori earned a BA in Linguistics from the University of Minnesota and an MA and PhD in Linguistics from UMass Amherst, with a focus on psycholinguistics and spoken language processing. While in graduate school, she also spent three semesters at the Institute of Linguistics, Stockholm University, Sweden. Upon completion of her PhD, she was granted Assistant Professor of Linguistics status at a major research university. During her time there, she was awarded a Lilly Foundation Grant for Teaching Development. She left that position in 1987 after coming to the conclusion that her passion was for teaching, not research, and a teaching career was not sufficiently supported at a research-focused university.
After teaching in a variety of contexts and, along with her husband, raising their two daughters (the most important teaching job ever!), she joined the faculty of a community college.
During her years on the community college faculty, she developed a passion for supporting students in building their skills at academic success and for supporting her faculty peers in developing clear courses and engaging classes. In 2016 she received a Faculty Senate award for Best/Promising Practices. She co-authored a book series in outcome-based curriculum design and effective teaching and has led workshops and presentations to community college faculty and administrators in the principles and practices of learner-centered curriculum design and delivery. She retired in 2019 from Rogue Community College as Faculty Emeritus and now focuses her energies on yoga education.
